GEO, generative engine optimization, is the practice of making a page likely to be quoted inside an AI answer rather than ranked in a list. Roughly three quarters of it is ordinary SEO. The genuinely different part is that the unit of competition shrinks from the page to the paragraph.

GEO — generative engine optimization — is the practice of making a page likely to be quoted inside an AI-generated answer, rather than ranked in a list of links. The term comes from academic work published in 2023 and has since been picked up by the marketing industry, with the usual amount of inflation.

The uncomfortable part first

Most of GEO is SEO. The overlap is somewhere around three quarters: be crawlable, be referenced by other sites, write pages that are actually about something. Anyone selling GEO as an entirely new discipline that obsoletes what you already do is selling you a rename.

The remaining quarter is real, though, and it is where this article is useful.

The five pillars

1. Retrievability

Before anything can be quoted it has to enter the candidate set the model reads. This is ordinary findability: crawlable pages, independent sites referencing you, no accidental blocks in robots.txt. Nothing here is new, and nothing further down works without it.

2. Quotability

This is the pillar that genuinely differs from SEO. A search engine ranks a page; a model lifts a passage. So the unit of optimisation shrinks from the page to the paragraph. A clean forty-to-sixty-word answer near the top of the page gets used; the same information spread across three sections does not.

3. Corroboration

A claim that appears on one site is a claim. The same claim on eight independent sites is a fact, as far as the system is concerned. This is why being mentioned elsewhere outranks almost everything you can do on your own pages — and why a network of pages you control counts as one source, not eight.

4. Structure

Headings phrased as questions, because retrieval matches question to question. Lists and tables, because they survive extraction intact where prose does not. Schema markup, because it tells the crawler literally what the page is instead of making it infer.

5. Specificity

Numbers, prices, dates, named limits. "Plans start at $29 a month" can be quoted; "affordable pricing" cannot. This pillar is the cheapest to act on and the most commonly ignored, because marketing copy is trained out of specifics.

What is actually different from SEO

Who sends trafficThe linkSometimes nobody — the answer may be enough
What repetition doesRisks looking spammyBuilds corroboration, if sources are independent

The row that matters most

The fourth one. A cited answer may satisfy the reader completely, and no click ever reaches you. That is not a flaw to engineer around — it is the trade. You are buying presence at the moment of decision rather than a visit, and the two are measured differently. Judging GEO by sessions in your analytics will make successful work look like failure.

What to ignore

Keyword density for AI, hidden prompts in page text, and anything described as "tricking" a model. Instructions buried in a page are not obeyed by production assistants, and writing to game extraction produces pages that are worse for humans — who are still, in the end, the ones who buy.

Frequently asked questions

Is GEO just a new name for SEO?
About three quarters of it is. Crawlability, independent references and genuinely useful pages matter identically to both. The quarter that differs is real: a model lifts a passage rather than ranking a page, which moves the unit of optimisation from the page to the paragraph.
Does GEO bring traffic?
Sometimes it brings none, by design. A cited answer can satisfy the reader completely with no click reaching you. You are buying presence at the moment of decision rather than a visit, so judging it by sessions will make successful work look like failure.
Do hidden instructions in a page work on AI?
No. Production assistants do not obey instructions buried in page text, and writing to game extraction produces pages that read worse for humans — who remain the ones who actually buy. Treat any tactic described as tricking a model as wasted effort.

How to appear in Perplexity

Perplexity shows its sources, which makes it measurable. The five-step loop, what usually beats a vendor page, and the ceiling you cannot pass from your own domain.
