AEO — answer engine optimization — is the practice of writing so that your page becomes the answer, not a link to it. The target is the answer slot: a featured snippet, a voice reply, a People Also Ask box, a generated paragraph. The native unit of AEO is not the page or even the paragraph. It is the question-and-answer pair.
AEO, GEO, SEO: the distinction that is actually useful
These three terms overlap heavily and are often sold as if they were separate industries. The honest version fits in a table:
| What you are trying to win | Unit of work | How you know it worked | |
|---|---|---|---|
| SEO | A position in a list | The page | Rank for a query |
| AEO | The answer slot itself | A question-answer pair | Your text appears as the answer |
| GEO | A mention inside generated prose | A quotable passage | Citation rate across repeated questions |
Most of the work serves all three. The reason to keep the names apart is that they are measured differently, and measuring the wrong one makes success look like failure.
What AEO actually asks you to do
- Write the question the way people ask it. Not "pricing information" but "how much does it cost".
- Answer in the first two sentences. The answer slot is short. Anything after the second sentence is unlikely to be taken.
- One question per block. A heading that bundles two questions wins neither.
- Keep the answer self-contained. No "as mentioned above". Lifted out of the page, it has no above.
- Mark up question-answer pairs with FAQPage schema where the questions are real.
The trade nobody puts in the pitch
Winning the answer slot often means losing the click. If your page is the answer, the person has what they came for and never arrives. This is called zero-click, and it is not a bug you can engineer out — it is the thing you bought.
Whether that is a good trade depends entirely on your business:
- Good trade: you sell something people decide on later and need to remember the name of. Being the answer builds the memory.
- Bad trade: your revenue comes from page views, display ads or affiliate clicks. Then the answer slot takes your revenue and hands you credit.
If you are in the second group, AEO should be applied deliberately and narrowly — win the answer for questions that lead to a purchase, and let the questions that only lead to reading stay as full articles.
What it costs
Almost nothing, which is the honest argument for doing it. Rewriting a page's opening into a direct answer and adding three real questions at the bottom takes under an hour per page and needs no budget, no agency and no tool. Compare that to anything else on a marketing invoice.
Where AEO stops working
At the candidate step. None of this matters if the retrieval system never fetches your page, and the fix for that is not writing — it is being published and referenced where crawlers already go. AEO makes a page win once it is in the running. It cannot put a page in the running.
