Why AI doesn't mention your company (and how to fix it)

Most companies go unmentioned by AI for six ordinary reasons: nobody links to them, their pages state nothing quotable, they exist only on platforms the model cannot read, their name collides with a common word, their robots.txt blocks AI crawlers, or the domain is simply too new for references to have accumulated.

It is rarely one dramatic failure. A company goes unmentioned by AI because of a handful of ordinary problems stacked on top of each other, and each one has a check you can run this afternoon.

Before an assistant can quote you, it has to find you. Retrieval leans on the same signals search has always used, and the strongest one is still whether independent sites reference you. A site nobody points at is a site the system has little reason to pull into the candidate set.

The check: search for your domain name in quotes, excluding your own site. If almost nothing comes back, this is your bottleneck and nothing further down this list will matter much.

2. Your pages do not state anything quotable

"Innovative solutions for your business" cannot be cited, because it contains no fact. A model composing an answer needs a sentence it can lift. Prices, numbers, dates, limits and plain definitions are liftable; adjectives are not.

The check: open your homepage and try to find one sentence a journalist could quote without rewriting it. If you cannot, the model cannot either.

3. You only exist where the model cannot read

A business whose entire presence is a social profile is close to invisible to a system that retrieves text from the open web. The content may be excellent; it is simply behind a door the crawler does not open.

4. Your name collides with a common word

If the brand is also an everyday word, the model cannot separate mentions of you from noise. The fix is not renaming the company — it is always appearing next to a qualifier, so that "Orbit" becomes "Orbit, the logistics platform", consistently, everywhere.

5. Your site blocks the crawlers that feed the assistants

This one is common and invisible. AI crawlers are separate from the search crawler, use different user agents, and a robots.txt written years ago may be refusing them without anyone noticing. Blocking them does not protect your content from being summarised — it only removes you from the answers.

The check: open yourdomain.com/robots.txt and look for a blanket Disallow: / under any user agent you do not recognise.

6. Nothing has had time to accumulate

A domain registered three months ago has no reference history, and references are the slow part. This is the only item on the list that fixes itself, and the only one where patience is the right answer.

Which one is yours?

SymptomLikely causeWhere to start
Assistants name competitors, never youNo independent referencesGet mentioned off-site
You are mentioned, but described wronglyNo quotable definition anywhereWrite one clear sentence and repeat it
Your site is found but never citedPages answer nothing directlyPut the answer in the first paragraph
Nothing of yours appears anywhereCrawlers blocked, or site too newCheck robots.txt first

What to do first

Run the robots.txt check, because it takes two minutes and occasionally explains everything. Then work on references, because it is the slowest to move and the one everything else rests on. Rewriting your pages is worth doing, but a perfectly quotable page that nothing links to still does not get quoted.

Frequently asked questions

Does blocking AI crawlers protect my content?
It stops those specific crawlers from reading your pages directly, but it does not stop your content being summarised from other sources that quote you. In practice the main effect is removing yourself from the answers while competitors stay in them.
How many links do I need before AI mentions me?
There is no threshold to hit. What matters is independence and repetition: a handful of genuinely separate sites referring to you is worth more than a long list of pages from the same network, which a model weighs as a single source.
The AI mentions my company but gets the facts wrong. Why?
Because the clearest description of you available online is not yours. Models assemble a description from whatever they can find; if your own pages never state plainly what you do, something older or third-hand fills the gap.

How to appear in Perplexity

Perplexity shows its sources, which makes it measurable. The five-step loop, what usually beats a vendor page, and the ceiling you cannot pass from your own domain.
